Although the first remains of this species were found in Indonesia at the end of the 19th century, this species originates from Africa, and it is also the first hominin species that, apart from Africa, inhabits other continents of the Old World, Asia and Europe. The remains of Homo erectus found in Africa are classified by some researchers as a special species of Homo ergaster. Anatomical details also indicate significant changes in the overall structure of Homo members compared to earlier australopithecines. Like us, the members of the species Homo erectus, have shorter arms and longer legs and do not retain the adaptations for climbing in the shoulder frame and arm that we observe in australopithecines.

The meaning of the species name Pithecanthropus is a combination of the word pithecus - a Neo-Latin word of Greek origin meaning monkey or ape and anthropos – a greek word meaning man, and erectus is Latin for upright. The name of the species ergaster, as some researchers call the African variation of Homo erectus, comes from the Greek word meaning hardworking or worker.
