Mauer, Heidelberg, Germany

1907
At the beginning of the 20th century, a lower jaw was found near Heidelberg, which due to its morphological characteristics (which are more primitive than those in Neanderthals) was attributed to a new species - Homo heidelbergensis. However, as with Homo antecessor, it is possible to attribute the Mauer find to the European population of Homo erectus.
The meaning of the species name Homo is Latin for man, and the species name heidelbergensis is dedicated to the city near which the first remains attributed to this species were found.
