The skull that was found in 1972 –KNM-ER 1470 – was attributed to the new species Homo rudolfensis. The difference between H. habilis and H. rudolfensis is that the remains attributed to the species Homo rudolfensis are larger. However, scientific debate still continues as to whether the remains attributed to this species are truly different from the species Homo habilis.
The meaning of the species name Homo is Latin for man, and rudolfensis is a Latinized word dedicated to the place where the remains of this species were found, next to Lake Rudolf, which is the old name for today's Lake Turkana.
