In the north of Spain, the area of Mount Atapuerca contains numerous sites within its karst complex. Fossil remains of various Pleistocene populations belonging to the genus Homo were found at these sites. The scientists who described these findings attribute the remains of the boy found at the Gran Dolina site to the species Homo antecessor, and some consider them to be a European variation of the species Homo erectus. Incisions found on the boy's bones indicate possible cannibalism.
The meaning of the species name Homo is Latin for man, and antecessor is Latin for ‘one that goes before’.
