Corundite
Corundite is an extraordinary metamorphic rock. Its main component is corundum (Al₂O₃), and is often mixed with smaller amounts of other minerals such as magnetite, hematite, and quartz.
Corundite, also known as emery stone, is an abrasive material used for grinding and polishing due to its exceptional hardness and wear resistance.
It was used in ancient Egypt and Rome for polishing jewelry and making fine objects, and for sharpening weapons and tools.
This specimen comes from the island of Naxos in the Aegean Sea, a historically known source of corundite of high-quality abrasive nature.
